People who live in the villages surrounding Alton who cannot drive, need to use their Post Offices to guard against their closure. As well as all the usual licensing, cash handling and mail functions, Post Office branches offer banking services for current account customers of Lloyds TSB, Barclays, Alliance & Leicester, Nationwide and Co-operative Bank customers as well as Bank of Ireland, Clydesdale Bank, First Direct (in Scotland only), Smile and Cahoot.
Age Concern is running a campaign to maintain as many Post Offices as possible. A report and questionnaire can be found here

Currently we have 14.326 Post Offices in the UK of which 80% are claimed to regularly lose money and so require an annual total grant of £150m to sustain them. More than 4m pensioners use Post Offices for pension and banking services but the Card Account will be scrapped in 2010. About 200 Post Offices have closed in the past 12 months and almost 7000 since 1990. 2500 of the country's Post offices are now under threat of closure in the next 18 months. Possibly 40 out of 234 offices in Hampshire are likely to be closed. Locally East Tisted is fairly certain to be closed unless a miracle occurs.
(Every Post Office closed will mean more unecessary travel, mostly by car, to reach one.)
About twenty six million customers use a Post Office every week. Age Concern research shows that 99% of older people in rural areas consider their post office to be a lifeline. It says the Government should listen to the people it represents by keeping the Post Office card account and continuing the subsidy of rural branches.
Here is a letter published by Isitfair about the closures.

According to the Federation of Small Businesses:-
87% of all mail is business mail.
94% of small firms use Royal Mail exclusively.
97% of small businesses say the Post Office has a vital role to play in the local community.
82% believe the closure of their local Post Office would have a significant impact on their business.

Emergency Telephone Numbers

101 is a confidential, 24 hour number provided by Hampshire Constabulary and local authorities.
Use it to report crime and antisocial behaviour problems. Currently there is a 10p call charge for this number!

999 or 112 should be used if offenders are nearby, life is at risk, injury is caused or threatened and crime or disorder is in progress.
Do also use 999 or 112 for health emergencies, fire, police, coastguard, mountain rescue, cave rescue or nuclear emergency.
Both 999 and 112 give access to the same emergency services.

More than 70% of 999 calls are about non emergency problems such as vandalism and littering.
The 101 number is designed to remove unnecessary 999 calls while improving access to the police.
The police can also be contacted on 08450 454545.

0845 46 47 should be used to contact NHS Direct for health related questions and concerns.

Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 can be used anonymously to say what you know about a crime.

Public Display covering proposed changes at Treloar College in Holybourne.

Treloar College is owned and run by the Treloar Trust as a specialist College for young people, aged 16 or over, with physical disabilities from all over the UK and overseas. It is a regional centre of excellence in this area of education, and the Trust is one of the largest employers in East Hampshire District with approximately 720 employees. Further information on the work of Treloar Trust can be obtained from
the Trust website.

The majority of buildings at Holybourne are 50 years old and improvements in technology, therapy and other techniques mean that the older buildings on site are becoming increasingly unsuited to meeting the needs of current and future students. The Trust therefore believes that the best way forward is to look to improve the College campus facilities at Holybourne. Many of the existing buildings, mainly around the periphery of the site are expected be retained, though it is currently expected that the central core of the current site would be progressively replaced in a phased manner. The Trust is also investigating the possibility of moving the School (students up to 16) from Upper Froyle to Holybourne.

This is a unique opportunity for the Trust and it has to be successful. The changes could also have a major impact on Upper Froyle depending on the final use of the School buildings and site.

Consultations associated with the planning application(s) will be necessary to deliver the Trust’s vision. The documentation associated with the application(s) are in the early stages of being prepared, and this display forms part of a community consultation exercise associated with the project.
